Docking (ASA-118)

Most people who have never been on a sailboat believe that the scariest part is being on an ocean in a storm, but anyone who has spent any time on a boat knows the heart-pounding feeling of approaching the dock in a little wind and counter current.

Our Two-Day Docking Class won't cure that fear, but it will give you the tools to deal with it.

The reason this course exists is because our founder, Captain Tom Tursi, did not feel their was enough time in a regular class to adequately introduce docking, so he wrote his own course.  We have been using his materials for more than a dozen years and the hundreds of students who have taken the course agree with him.

Over 16 hours, you will be taught the basics of controlling the boat near slips and T-heads, fuel docks and pump-outs.  You'll also learn about the four forces that control a boat during a docking maneuver and how to use them to make the big boat go into the small space.  You will also learn how to effectively communicate what you need to your crew, so that everyone is on the same page.

We’ll provide you with a copy of our training plan, unique to our school, with step-by-step instructions on how to work together with your crewmates.

If you want an even more immersive experience, you can stay aboard the boat during your class.  Check out our Sleeping Aboard page to see the details of this benefit.
