You've done the basics and now have a feel for how the boat is going to operate under sail and while motoring. It's time to spread your wings and actually go somewhere!
The Chesapeake Bay has literally thousands of marinas, mooring fields and anchorages, just waiting to be explored. In this five day course, you'll plan a route that will take you to one of each of these locations, spend the night on the anchor, in a transient marina and on a mooring ball, finally returning to Lankford Bay Marina.
The first day of the class will find you on the boat, discussing with your instructor the more advanced systems, the actual or simulated casualties you may encounter and you will plan the menu and determine the provisions you will need for your four days underway. Then, while your captain picks up the supplies, you and your crewmates will plan the route you will take, identify the waypoints along your path and then creating a navigation plan to guide you while underway.
During the next three days, you will travel from port to port, sailing and motoring along the path you developed and taking into consideration the winds and currents along the way. Each afternoon, you will arrive at a new place to explore. Whether sitting in a secluded anchorage, enjoying dinner in the cockpit while the sun heads to the far horizon or wandering through a quaint bayside town, exploring the shops and eateries, you will know that you got there through your own efforts.
After your last overnight, you will head back to our home marina, where you will refuel, pump out and do all of the other tasks associated with wrapping up a charter cruise. We’ll provide you with a copy of our training plan, unique to our school, with step-by-step instructions on how to work together with your crewmates.
At the end of this course, you will have the experience and training to charter a boat in the Chesapeake Bay and, perhaps, much further away. Our students have ended up in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and even the South Pacific.
Because of the nature of this class, you will be staying aboard the boat, one of our Island Packet 32s. Since your instructor will be staying aboard with you, these classes are limited to three students, except in very unusual circumstances.
